Debt Collection: Overview of the Fair Debt Collection Act

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act was passed to make clear what is considered illegal when debt collectors try to collect from a consumer. Techniques such as harassment, abuse, and misrepresentation are considered illegal practices. The law also defined what are considered the “fair” debt collection practices that they need to follow, such as announcing who they are and why they are contacting you. Although debt collection is a highly regulated field, most debt collectors that break the law rely of the fact that consumers won’t know their rights, and illegal practices are quite common.
