2017 Dodge Journey Top Complaints and Problems – Is Your Car A Lemon?

Cruise control, electrical, airbag, steering, engine and powertrain issues among the top complaints received by the NHTSA from vehicle owners

In the SUV market, there are plenty of options available to today’s consumer. One of the popular choices was the 2017 Dodge Journey. Not only does it provide additional space for today’s busy family, but it has lots of style. The automaker claims the newer models offer “confidence behind the wheel,” but it turns out that many owners are scared to death driving this SUV. It comes complete with faulty airbags, electrical problems, a defective engine and malfunctioning vehicle speed control.

Airbags

Every driver expects the airbags of a vehicle to work correctly when an accident occurs. Yet, that’s one of the biggest complaints found with the 2017 Journey.

One NHTSA report states, “The contact owns a 2017 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle was T-boned by a second vehicle. During the incident, the vehicle rolled over 3 times and the front end and sides were severely damaged but no side curtain or front airbags deployed. During the crash, the drier sustained an injured chest and hearing loss, the front passenger sustained neck, back, head and right shoulder injuries. A police report was taken at the scene. The cause of the failure was not determined. The vehicle was destroyed and towed away. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified. The failure mileage was 80,000.”

FCA hasn’t released any communication reflecting known trouble with the airbags. While this might seem like an isolated incident, there are numerous complaints revealing the same type of malfunction. It is odd that FCA hasn’t done anything about it, considering this is thecentral part of any vehicle’s safety system. As of now, most drivers can’t have confidence behind the wheel. Instead, they spend time wondering if the airbags will protect them during an accident.

Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2017 Dodge Journey Airbags Problems:

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 DODGE JOURNEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH THE VEHICLE WAS T-BONED BY A SECOND VEHICLE. DURING THE INCIDENT THE VEHICLE ROLLED OVER 3 TIMES AND THE FRONT END AND SIDES WERE SEVERELY DAMAGED BUT NO SIDE CURTAIN OR FRONT AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. DURING THE CRASH THE DRIVER SUSTAINED A INJURED CHEST AND HEARING LOST, THE FRONT PASSENGER SUSTAINED NECK, BACK, HEAD AND RIGHT SHOULDER INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS TAKEN AT THE SCENE. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED AWAY. THE LOCAL DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.

ONE MONTH AFTER PURCHASING THE 2017 DODGE JOURNEY THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A CERTIFIED DODGE DEALER AND THEY INFORMED US THAT THE AIRBAG WIRING HARNESS LOCATED UNDER THE DRIVERS FRONT SEAT WAS FAULTY. THE TOLD US THE AIRBAG WIRING HARNESS IS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTY AND THAT THE NEW REPLACEMENT AIRBAG WIRING HARNESS WOULD COST AROUND $800. THE AIRBAG LIGHT STILL GOES ON & OFF RANDOMLY WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN. IT DOESN’T MATTER IF IT IS BEING DRIVEN STRAIGHT OR ON CURVES OR TURNING. IT JUST RANDOMLY COMES ON WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN.

I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT WHEN THE VEHICLE 2 CARS AHEAD OF ME SLAMMED ON THEIR BRAKES AT A GREEN LIGHT. I REAR ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME GOING APPROXIMATELY 45MPH HEAD ON, CAUSING MAJOR FRONT END DAMAGE. NEITHER OF THE FRONT AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. THE CAR WAS TOTALED

Electrical

The electrical system in any vehicle must work correctly for a pleasant driving experience. Whether the power is running the engine or the interior features, consumers don’t want to deal with malfunctions.

One NHTSA complaint illustrates what is happening. It states, “My air keeps coming back on, no matter how many times that I turn it off. It comes back on by itself. The transmission slips and jerks on the back roads, highway and interstate. My husband has called [the dealer] and keeps getting the run around about the situations. The air is an electrical issue which can cause a fire if left like it is. I was told by the salesman that he would get back to me in a couple of days. That is not professional and is very dangerous for everyone in my vehicle.”

According to Service Bulletin #08-097-17, there are several electrical complaints that drivers might face. This particular communication discusses how the headlamps flicker during nighttime usage. To repair it, the technicians must reprogram the BCM with the latest software. There’s nothing better to scare your consumers to death than having the headlights go dim while driving at night. Maybe they serve as a warning sign to other drivers not to purchase the Journey. It’s like a flashing alert system.

Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2017 Dodge Journey Electrical Problems:

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 DODGE JOURNEY. WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE VEHICLE’S BLUETOOTH FAILED TO OPERATE CORRECTLY. UPON REACHING HIS DESTINATION, THE CONTACT PARKED, TURNED OFF, AND EXITED THE VEHICLE. UPON RETURNING TO THE VEHICLE SEVERAL HOURS LATER, IT FAILED TO START. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE RESTARTED USING BATTERY BOOSTER CABLES. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED THREE WEEKS LATER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO STERLING HEIGHTS DODGE  BUT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE DEALER WAS AWARE OF THE FAILURE, WHICH WAS DUE TO THE MANUFACTURER RECEIVING DEFECTIVE BATTERIES FROM CHINA. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT ASSIST BECAUSE THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,000.

I HAD MY JOURNEY PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY, GRABBED MY PURSE AND MY DAUGHTER AND, HEADED OUT TO RUN ERRANDS. I DROVE TO MY DESTINATION, TURNED OFF THE CAR AND WENT TO LOCK IT FROM THE OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE. THERE WERE NO BEEPS AND THE DOORS WOULDN’T LOCK. I CHECKED MY PURSE AND THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF THE CAR, NO KEY FOBS WERE FOUND. I GOT IN THE CAR AND IT STARTED UP AGAIN. AFRAID TO LEAVE THE CAR IN THE PARKING LOT, I CALLED MY HUSBAND WHO CONFIRMED THAT BOTH MY SET OF CAR KEYS AND HIS SET OF CAR KEYS WERE AT HOME ON THE KEY HOOK. I’M EXTREMELY PUZZLED AS TO HOW MY CAR STARTED WITHOUT THE KEY FOB, LET ME DRIVE IT WITHOUT WARNING ME THERE WAS NO KEY FOB IN THE CAR, AND THEN LET ME RESTART IT SEVERAL TIMES WITHOUT THE KEY FOB. WE JUST PURCHASED THIS CAR USED A MONTH AGO, AND THE SALES PERSON GAVE US BOTH KEY FOBS. I TORE THE CAR APART, GLOVE BOX, CENTER CONSOLE UNDER SEATS, EVERYWHERE AND NO OTHER KEY FOB HAS BEEN FOUND. MY HUSBAND BROUGHT ME MY CAR KEYS AND I STOOD 20 FEET AWAY AND THE CAR STILL STARTED WITHOUT THE FOB IN THE CAR.

WENT TO GET IN CAR DIDN’T OPEN, HAD TO USE THE KEY, TRIED TO START THE CAR IT DIDN’T ,HAD TO USE THE KEY, PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AS WE WERE BACKING UP AND ALL OF THE SUDDEN THE CAR WENT FORWARD AND RAN INTO A CONCRETE PILLAR IN A PARKING GARAGE, THE CAR WAS PARKED

Engine

The Dodge Journey prides itself on having a powerful engine and plenty of power, but owners can’t seem to agree with this assumption.

One Edmunds reviewer wrote, “At 15,500 miles the transmission failed (it was the valve body in the transmission). At 23,500 miles it started stalling intermittently and not throwing a code. Without a code and unable to cause it to fail, the dealership told me to continue driving, it will get worse and throw a code. At 29,600 miles, after hundreds of stalls in all driving conditions, it finally threw a code, crankshaft position sensor. Dealer replaced the sensor and it stalled before I made it home. They replaced the connectors on the wiring harness and it stalled again only with a new twist, the traction control light came on and no brakes after I started up and moving again.”

Service Bulletin #9003694 discusses some difficulty with the oil pump assembly. It appears that the Pentastar V6 engines might face relief valve failure. While this is something that most automakers would simply replace under warranty, Dodge dealers are told they must receive approval from the higher-ups. That indicates that some oil pump replacements are denied under warranty. At what level would this part swap be rejected, especially after FCA acknowledged that they are defective? This warranty doesn’t seem to provide a lot of confidence for today’s drivers.

Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2017 Dodge Journey Engine Problems:

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 DODGE JOURNEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PUSH BUTTON START FEATURE HESITATED UPON PUSHING THE BUTTON. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND RESUME DRIVING; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE CONTINUED. DURING THE MOST RECENT FAILURE, THE CONTACT STATED THAT SMOKE APPEARED FROM THE ENGINE. THE CONTACT AND THE PASSENGERS EXITED THE VEHICLE AS IT SHUT OFF ON ITS OWN. THE VEHICLE WAS FIRST TOWED TO THE CONTACT’S HOME AND THEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A DEFECTIVE STARTER, WHICH WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALER WERE NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 70,000.

ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASH AND I IMMEDIATELY NOTICED THAT THE CAR WAS HESITATING AND FELT AS IT WAS LOSING POWER WHILE ACCELERATING. I THEN TOOK IT INTO AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP AND WAS INFORMED THAT MY CATALYTIC CONVERTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND WAS OVER $800 IN REPAIRS. WHILE RESEARCHING ONLINE, I CAME ACROSS A RECALL FOR THE SAME EXACT ISSUE ON THE 2011-2016 SERIES OF THE DODGE JOURNEYS. I FEEL AS IF THE 2017 SERIES SHOULD BE INCLUDED AS WELL.

2017 DODGE JOURNEY SXT IS STALLING OUT AT VARIOUS SPEEDS CAUSING EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD TO THOSE ON BOARD AND OTHER MOTORISTS. THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE THAT HAS BEEN ADDRESSED AT LEAST 6 – 7 TIMES NOW ONLY TO CONTINUE. DODGE KNOWS SOMETHING BUT HAS REFUSED TO COME FORWARD WITH A RECALL.

Powertrain

Imagine driving down the highway and having the steering wheel lock while making a turn. That would be a scary situation, yet it happens to Ram owners across the country.

Here’s what one of them had to say on Edmunds. “The steering wheel locks when you turn left, please google it in RAM forum, Fiat/RAM refuse to knowledge it, maybe they waiting for few accidents/ death before issue a recall. (like the Boeing 737 max).”

Again, we see two steering-related safety recalls on these trucks. The first labeled with NHTSA Campaign Number 19V020000 talks about how consumers lose power steering ability and have to put forth extra effort to steer the vehicle. What’s even scarier is NHTSA Campaign Number 19V201000 which addresses how drivers might end up with a steering wheel that detaches from the column. This is no joke; it’s like a real-life cartoon playing out in Ram truck cabs everywhere.

Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2017 Dodge Journey Transmission Problems:

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 DODGE JOURNEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE GEAR SHIFTER WAS EASILY MOVING INDEPENDENTLY. THE FAILURE RECURRED FOUR TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 7,000. THE VIN WAS NOT PROVIDED.

I NOTICED A VIBRATION/HESITATION AROUND 40MPH AND TOOK MY CAR TO THE LOCAL PISCHKE SHOP AND THEY PERFORMED A REPROGRAMMING OF THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE TO THE LATEST SOFTWARE. UNFORTUNATELY THAT REPROGRAMMING DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM AND I WAS TOLD TO REACH OUT TO CHRYSLER DIRECTLY. *TT *TR

THE TRANSMISSION TAKE OFF BUT IT HAS SLUGGISH IN THE TRANSMISSION,AND WHEN SLOWING DOWN THE CVT SEEN LIKE IT NOT CORRESPONDING WITH IT PARTS OF CHANGING. I’M ASSUMING ALL THE 2017 DODGE JOURNEY HAS THAT PROBLEM BUT NOT REPORTED.. MY DODGE JOURNEY SXT V6 THE TRANSMISSION FOR THE 2017 DODGE JOURNEY SXT V6 NEEDS TO LOOK AT FOR SERVICE FOR MAJOR PROBLEM OCCURRED IN THE FUTURE

THE TRANSMISSION IS FAILING TO SHIFT. IT SHIFTS EXTREMELY HARD AND THE REVERSE TAKES A FEW MINUTES TO KICK IN OR IT DOESN’T WORK AT ALL. SOMETIMES THE VEHICLE WILL NOT SHIFT AT ALL. THERE IS A STRANGE BURNING SMELL AFTER GOING UP A HILL. MY ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL SENSOR IS ALREADY ON AND THERE IS ONLY 13000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. I PURCHASED IT IN JANUARY AND IT’S ONLY MAY. I HAVE THE SHIFTING ISSUES WHILE DRIVING. WHEN IT DOES SHIFT ITS A SHARP JERK. IT’S A CONSTANT PROBLEM. I NO LONGER WANT THE VEHICLE.

Service Brakes

With all these problems, one can only hope that the Journey’s braking system works the way it should. Sadly, that’s not the case.

As illustrated with this NHTSA review, the brakes also have serious issues. The car has 35,095 miles on it and makes a grinding noise when it slows down from speeds of 25 mph to 35 mph and comes to a shaky stop. Then, when at speeds of 50 mph, plus it shakes and grinds even louder. I see that it’s a rescue ring issue for this vehicle.”

Again, the Dodge upper-level team has chosen to simply say nothing related to the braking complaints. They haven’t issued one service bulletin related to the service brakes, instead ignoring what the people have been saying. While they turn their heads, there are tons of drivers on the road right now dealing with a malfunctioning powertrain and brakes that won’t stop them properly. It’s a disaster waiting to happen and certainly doesn’t inspire confidence.

Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2017 Dodge Journey Brake Problems:

THE ABS LIGHT AND THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS HAVE BEEN ON MY CAR CONTINUOUSLY. AT FIRST THEY WOULD COME ON INTERMITTENTLY DURING A RIDE AND THEN STAY ON. BUT NOW, THEY ARE ON DURING ALMOST EVERY RIDE DURING STARTUP.

Steering

No one expects to purchase a new vehicle and have trouble with the steering. This is one component that is just supposed to work, fresh off the lot.

Yet, this Edmunds review states something differently. “After 30000 miles, things have really gone downhill.  The engine has developed an idle shake and caused the belt tension pulley completely fall off.  I had to have three attempts to get the front end properly aligned.  It is in the shop now for three plus weeks, at least they provided us with a free rental.  I would recommend one not to buy the 2.4 engine.”

Notice the problems are intertwined between handling and performance. That’s because the 2017 Dodge Journey exhibits so many concerns, it’s hard to differentiate one from another. With all of the complaints, it’s expected that the automaker would have fixes and replies lined up, but yet again, there is no communication about the handling or steering. Confidence behind the wheel starts with feeling in control, but owners can’t possibly feel that way with the Journey. It should be listed as “Craziness behind the wheel” instead.

Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2017 Dodge Journey Steering Problems:

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 DODGE JOURNEY. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED AND BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO COAST THE VEHICLE OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND POWERED OFF THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TOWED TO MERRICK DODGE CHRYSLER JEEP OF WANTAGH WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE COMPUTER NEEDED TO BE RECALIBRATED, THE RACK AND PINION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, THE POWER STEERING HOSE NEEDED TO BE FLUSHED AND A WHEEL ALIGNMENT WAS NEEDED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 59297663. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 44,000.

I HAVE HAD 3 INCIDENTS, WITH THE LATEST ON 12/23 WHEN DURING A RAPID BREAKING TO AVOID COLLISION AS A VEHICLE DID ILLEGAL LANE CHANGE IN FRONT OF ME, MY WALLET, WHICH I HAD ON TOP OF THE MIDDLE COMPARTMENT, PUSHED THE CLUTCH AND CHANGED THE GEAR TO REVERSE AND MY CAR WENT BACKWARDS ALMOST COLLIDING WITH A VEHICLE BEHIND ME. ON OTHER INCIDENT ON THANKSGIVING DAY IN 2017 I WAS MAKING AN U-TURN WHEN I HAD TO BREAK FOR A CAR WHICH TURNED RIGHT SHARPLY AND MY SMALL PURSE FLEW AND SWITCH THE GEAR TO NEUTRAL AND I WAS PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL AND TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF INCOMING TRAFFIC AND COULDN’T UNDERSTAND RIGHT AWAY THAT THE CAR’S GEAR HAS BEEN PUSHED TO NEUTRAL AND THAT’S IS WHY I COULDN’T MOVE THE VEHICLE. THE CLUTCH HAS NO LOCK BUTTON AND WHEN PUSHED WITH EVEN TWO FINGERS IT SWITCHES THE GEARS, SO ANY SMALL OBJECT DURING A QUICK OR SADDEN BREAKING CAN CAUSE THE GEAR TO SWITCH TO REVERSE OR NEUTRAL

MY DODGE JOURNEY 2017 HAS A STEERING PROBLEM. I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM THE MARKET WHEN MY STEERING WHEEL STIFFED UP WHEN I WAS TRYING TO MAKE A LEFT. IT WAS VERY HARD TO MAKE A LEFT TURN AND THEN I TRY TO MAKE IT GO STRAIGHT AND IT WAS HARD TO EVEN IT OUT, AS WELL AS TRYING TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN.

Vehicle Speed Control

When it comes to maintaining speed in a vehicle, today’s cars have sophisticated systems that keep everything running smoothly. Yet, there are so many malfunctions with the 2017 Dodge Journey, that people find themselves in real danger.

Just look at this NHTSA complaint. “The contact owns a 2017 Dodge Journey. While driving approximately 70 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle spontaneously accelerated to approximately 100 mph. The contact was able to deactivate the cruise control and drove home. The following day, the vehicle was taken to [the dealer] where they determined that the cruise control failed. The vehicle was repaired. Two days later, while driving approximately 70 mph, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was determined that the incorrect code was entered when the vehicle’s computer was reprogrammed. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 11,063.”

It turns out this is a massive recall affecting nearly five million vehicles. FCA released NHTSA Campaign Number 18V332000, which expresses that the cruise control cannot be cancelled. Depressing the brake pedal and attempting to cancel the cruise control doesn’t work. To repair it, the PCM requires a software update. Maybe after customers have the cruise control, steering, service brakes, powertrain, airbags engine and electrical systems repaired, they will feel that confidence they were promised.

Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2017 Dodge Journey Cruise Control Problems:

CRUISE CONTROL STICKS WHEN USING IT ON THE HIGHWAY AND I HAVE TO PRESS THE CANCEL BUTTON MULTIPLE TIMES TO TAKE IT OFF WHILE OTHER TIMES THE CRUISE CONTROL WONT WORK AT ALL.

WHILE HAVING MY CRUISE CONTROL ON I PASSED A SEMI GOING UPHILL. AS SOON AS I GOT AROUND IT AND BACK INTO THE RIGHT LANE IT LOST SPEED SIGNIFICANTLY. I PULLED ONTO THE SHOULDER AND STOPPED. AFTER ABOUT 30 SECONDS I PULLED BACK ONTO THE HIGHWAY AND BUILT UP MY SPEED AGAIN. ABOUT 10-20 MINUTES LATER THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. I DID NOT FEEL SAFE PASSING ANYMORE VEHICLES. I CONTINUED ON HOME WHICH WAS 2 1/2 HOURS AWAY. JUST 1 MILE BEFORE GETTING HOME MY ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. ALL THIS HAPPENED ON SUNDAY JULY 22 ABOUT 1 PM. WE HAD JUST PURCHASED THIS DODGE ON JULY 17, 2017. MONDAY I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE WE HAD PURCHASED IT. THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE CRUISE CONTROL. WHEN I LOOKED UP ANY RECALLS IT DOESN’T SHOW ANY. IS MY DEALER LYING TO ME? ARE THEY HIDING SOMETHING I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?
