2017 Jeep Renegade Problems and Top Complaints – Is Your Car A Lemon?

Fuel system, electrical, brake, transmission and engine issues among the top complaints received by the NHTSA from vehicle owners

Jeep is known for creating strong off-road vehicles since what seems like the beginning of time. In fact, the 2017 Jeep Renegade was a proud winner of the Best Sub-Compact SUV award during the TAWA Texas Truck Rodeo. Still, we have to wonder what those judges saw in this model; it’s anything but reliable. The engine stalls whenever it wants and the electrical glitches are too numerous to count.

Problems with the Engine

Many modern Jeep models come with engine issues from stalling to burning through oil. This model just happens to do both.

Read what this user wrote on Edmunds. “Completely shuts off while freeway driving.Three times. Once I was told it was a simple computer reset that was needed. Three months later, they could not find an issue. 3rd time, about three weeks later I was told it needed a software upgrade. But I contacted corporate and turns out it needed several updates. But I suspect it’s something much more major. And based on NHTSA website, my issues are too common and there is grave danger here. Getting rear ended on the freeway because there is no warning as to when this will happen is inevitable. Car lunging forward while brake is depressed has already caused a few accidents with other owners.  The dealership in Wooster, Ohio has terrible auctioneer service. I am dealing with corporate right now. No one seems to know what’s happening and contact with them is not timely or given when promised.”

NHTSA Campaign Number 18V131000 discusses a recall for some models with the 2.4-liter engine. It turns out that there could be a cracked oil pump housing or balance shaft module. This causes the pump to fail and the engine to stall. It also leads to an excessive amount of oil usage. Despite the recall, owners still find that their SUVs consume more oil than normal and most dealerships aren’t doing anything about it. We guess the TAWA Texas Truck Rodeo judges had a full tank of oil before they tested the Renegade, and clearly, it didn’t stall during their runs.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 JEEP RENEGADE. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE COOLANT FAN WAS OFF CENTERED AND THE FUSE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE FUSE WAS REPLACED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE COOLANT FAN WAS CURRENTLY INOPERABLE. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,719

VEHICLE HAS STALLED NUMEROUS TIMES IN TRAFFIC. “LOW OIL PRESSURE” WILL COME ON BRIEFLY AND THEN ENGINE FAILS. SOMETIMES WHILE TURNING IF VEHICLE DOES NOT COME TO COMPLETE STOP. VEHICLE IS BURNING THROUGH OIL ALL THOUGH NO LEAKS ARE DETECTED OR VISIBLE EVEN AFTER OIL HAS BEEN CHANGED..

WE HAVE OUR OIL CHANGED REGULARLY AT THE SAME PLACE AS SOON AS THE OIL CHANGE LIGHT COMES ON OR WE MEET THE MILEAGE LISTED ON THE LAST OIL CHANGE STICKER, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST. WE HAD THE OIL CHANGED MAY 14, 2019 AND DROVE MAYBE 2500 MILES SINCE THAT DATE. LASTNIGHT MY HUSBAND AND KIDS WERE IN THE CAR SUDDENLY IT STALLED AND THE LOW OIL PRESSURE LIGHT CAME ON. THE UNIT THEN WAS FINE AND STARTED BACK UP WITH NO ISSUES, THEN THIS MORNING THE SAME THING. HE CALLED THE DEALER WE GOT IT AT AND THEY GOT IT IN RIGHT AWAY. SAID IT WAS SHOWING VERY LITTLE OIL, BUT NO VISIBLE LEAKS. IM SORRY I UNDERSTAND WANTING TO SAVE AN ENGINE BUT WHAT ABOUT LIVES IF IT STALLS AND CAUSES AN ACCIDENT. ALSO IF THE OIL IS THAT LOW, WHY DID THE OIL CHANGE LIGHT NOT COME ON. TO ME THIS SHOWING NUMEROUS REPORTS AND ISSUES AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE. WHY CHRYSLER. IS IT GOING TO TAKE A DEATH AND LAW SUIT FOR YOU TO CARE ABOUT YOUR CONSUMERS AND THEIR SAFETY?!? IM THINKING ABOUT CONTACTING A LAWYER AS NOW MY KIDS ARE AFRAID TO RIDE IN THE VEHICLE.

Problems with the Electrical System

What could be better than heading down the highway enjoying your favorite tunes and the wide-open road? Well, these dreams aren’t a reality for many Renegade owners that complain of glitch electronics. From radios to navigation systems, it’s impossible to tell when the equipment will work properly.

One person wrote this on Edmunds, “I owned my Trailhawk three weeks before it went to the service department for the first time.  The heated seats came on by themselves without a warning light.  They re-programmed the car.  Three days later the navigation system would not work, so they ordered a new one.  One week later, while pulling up to a red light, the car would not accelerate when the light changed.  The Jeep had died and all of the interior functions were still working and I did not feel the Jeep die.  Fortunately in rush hour I was not hit from behind.  The dealer has now had my Jeep 3 weeks, unable to find out why it died in traffic.    Run from this vehicle.  This is a systemic problem, with many complaints on the NHTSA website.  Jeep corporate has no solution for this vehicle’s problems.”

There is an NHTSA Campaign Number 17V485000 discussing this problem with a recall. It turns out numerous Renegade models had a software issue that led to the illumination of multiple indicator lamps when there was no malfunction. To remedy the problem, dealers needed to update the Instrument Panel Control software. Sadly, owners still experience these warning lights, but now it’s because of serious concerns and not a fake notice.

DASHBOARD INDICATED LEFT REAR TURN SIGNAL OUT AND THEN INDICATED RIGHT REAR TURN SIGNAL OUT AND THEN INDICATED BRAKE LIGHTS OUT ON STARTING CAR AND IN MOTION. TURN SIGNAL AUDIBLE INDICATOR WAS IRREGULAR. THE SITUATION ONLY LASTED A FEW MINUTES AND THEN THE DASHBOARD INDICATOR WENT OUT. I CHECKED ALL LIGHT UPON ARRIVING HOME AND THEY WERE AND ARE NOW FUNCTIONING NORMALLY..IT’S BEEN A COUPLE OF WEEKS SINCE THIS HAPPENED AND MY VEHICLE IS NOT LISTED IN THE COMPUTER SETTING RECALL. SHOULD I BE TAKING MY VEHICLE IN ANYWAY?

WHEN I STARTED MY VEHICLE MULTIPLE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON SHOWING THAT ONE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT WAS OUT, RIGHT BLINKER LIGHT OUT, AND THE THE LICENSE PLATE LIGHT. I SHUT THE VEHICHLE.OFF AND RESTARTED IT. ALL WARNING LIGHTS REMAINED. I THEN PROCEEDED TO DRIVE TO WORK. THE REAR LICENSE PLATE LIGHT WARNING CONTINUED TO FLASH ON AND OFF AS I DROVE.(THIS WAS VERY DISTRACTING) BEFORE I ARRIVED TO MY DESTINATION ALL WARNING LIGHTS WENT OFF. ALL OF MY LIGHT WERE WORKING UPON MY ARRIVAL. THE NEXT TIME I STARTED THE VEHICLE THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS AND ALL WENT BACK TO NORMAL. I HAVE NO.IDEA WHY THESE WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON OR IF THE WILL RETURN. NOTE: VEHICLE WAS STARTED USING REMOTE START BEFORE PUTTING IN RUN MODE. WARNING LIGHTS DID NOT COME ON UNTIL I PUT THE VEHICLE IN RUN MODE. THERE IS AN OPEN RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE, BUT MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT INCLUDED

MALFUNCTION LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATE WHEN THERE IS NO MALFUNCTION. WHILE DRIVING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DISPLAYED A WARNING MESSAGE INDICATING THE LEFT AND RIGHT TURN SIGNALS BOTH FRONT AND REAR, BOTH BRAKE LIGHTS, DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS, AND HEADLIGHTS WERE NOT OPERATING. AFTER PULLING OVER, WITH THE MESSAGE STILL DISPLAYED, IT WAS SEEN THAT EVERY LIGHT WAS ACTUALLY WORKING PROPERLY. THE SAME HAS HAPPENED REGARDING OTHER WARNING MESSAGES IN THE VEHICLE WHERE THE PROBLEM DID NOT ACTUALLY EXIST. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A RECALL WITH OTHER OF THIS SAME MODEL OF VEHICLE, BUT NOT WITH THIS SPECIFIC VIN

Problems with the Transmission

If the engine runs well, the next problem you have to concern yourself with is the transmission. As expected, the Renegade struggles to perform on both fronts.

One owner wrote this on the Edmunds website, “No engine problems yet but the transmission cant take much more jerking without becoming very costly. After 15k miles on it the front rotors both sides are horribly scored. I have a Cobalt with 210k miles on it with 2nd pair of rotors that look better then these things. Not supposed to be have these issues with a car this new. Acceleration is garbage; turn radius is garbage fuel mileage for a 4 cylinder is really garbage at 24mpg. The software is slow and glitchy. It’s really been a pretty bad vehicle so far.”

The company does address several issues with the powertrain. In Manufacturer Communication Number 18-118-16, they advise technicians to reprogram the PCM to get rid of false alerts. They also acknowledge trouble with Sport Mode in Manufacturer Communication Number 18-040-19. Overall, it appears there are more problems than they know how to handle. After all, even if they fix one, will it really change anything when the entire system is broken?

Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2017 Jeep Renegade Transmission Problems

WE BOUGHT A 2017 JEEP RENEGADE IN SEPTEMBER 2017. OUR RENEGADE HAS A VERY HARD SHIFT PROBLEM AND MAKES A LOUD CLUNK SOUND AROUND THE 25-30MPH RANGE…IT HITS SO HARD THAT IT FEELS LIKE SOMEONE HIT YOU IN THE BACK OF THE CAR WHILE DRIVING. WE HAD OUR CAR SERVICED 3 TIMES AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR THIS PROBLEM AND IT STILL CONTINUES. WHEN WE WENT BACK FOR THE 3RD TIME ON MAY 24TH, THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD US THAT IT WASN’T THROWING ANY CODES SO THEY DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO TO FIX IT. HE ALSO INFORMED US THAT THIS WAS A BIG PROBLEM WITH THE RENEGADES AND ALL THEY COULD DO WAS TO FLASH A SOFTWARE UPDATE EVEN THOUGH HE KNOWS IT WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 JEEP RENEGADE. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPED AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO JERK VIOLENTLY. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED PERIODICALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER, BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND THE CONTACT WAS PROVIDED A CASE NUMBER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 9,000.

AT APPROXIMATELY 31,500 MILES TRANSMISSION IS MAKING A LOUD CLUNK SOUND AND JARS THE VEHICLE. SO LOUD AND HARD IT STARTLES THE PASSENGERS. I BELIEVE IT IS HAPPENING BETWEEN 20-30 MPH AND WHEN I REMOVE ACCELERATOR AND BEGIN TO COAST. IT SEEMS TO BE WHEN I COAST DOWNHILL. NO WARNING LIGHTS DISPLAY ON THE DASH. SEEMS TO ONLY HAPPEN AT LOW SPEEDS. POSSIBLY HAS OCCURRED 4 TIMES BEFORE TAKING TO DEALERSHIP THE FIRST TIME.

Problems with the Fuel System

Part of what makes the engine go is the fuel system. Does it surprise you to learn that there are complaints about these operations as well? It shouldn’t.

On the NHTSA website, this was reported, “The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Renegade. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to drive and the Check Engine Warning Indicator illuminated. The vehicle was later taken to Helfman Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump failed and needed to be replaced.”

Again, FCA faced a recall as outlined in NHTSA Campaign Number 18V731000. Vehicles with the 2.4-liter engine might encounter an error with the fuel pump assembly under certain conditions. This results in the loss of fuel pressure and causes stalling. At this point, it appears the Renegade needs a new engine, transmission and multiple other components just to be a normal-running machine. Looks like it’s time to start over with a clean slate.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 JEEP RENEGADE. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V731000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE). THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. CHRYSLER DODGE WAS CONTACTED AND CONFIRMED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE RECALL REMEDY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND WAS NOT ABLE TO CONFIRM WHEN THE PARTS WERE TO BECOME AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.

I’VE DRIVEN OLD CARS WITH POOR FUEL PUMPS BEFORE AND THEY LET YOU KNOW BEFORE THEY DIE. AND THEY DON’T COME MAGICALLY BACK TO LIFE ONCE YOU PULL OFF THE ROAD AND TURN THE CAR OFF AND IMMEDIATELY BACK ON AGAIN. SOFTWARE DOES THAT – NOT MECHANICAL FAILURES. I REFUSE TO PUT MY FAMILY AT RISK AGAIN THIS SUMMER, AND SUMMER COMES FAST IN SOUTHERN ARIZONA. PLEASE HELP ME LOOK OUT FOR MY LITTLE FAMILY. WE DON’T HAVE THE MONEY TO TRADE OUR DEFECTIVE JEEP IN FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE, AND REALLY NEED THIS CAR TO WORK. THIS IS A DANGEROUS ISSUE THAT I FEEL IS NOT BEING PROPERLY RESPECTED BY THE MANUFACTURER.

FUEL PUMP RECALL: MAY CAUSE CAR TO STALL AND RESULT IN A CRASH. EVERY TIME I TURN MY CAR ON, IT IS OVERLY LOUD AND WHEN I’M DRIVING YOU CAN HEAR GUZZLINGN NOISES. NO INSPECTION WAS OFFERED ON MY CAR. MY CAR WAS BOUGHT AT A JEEP DEALERSHIP 2 DAYS PRIOR TO THIS RECALL WHICH WAS OVER 2 MONTHS AGO. REACHED OUT TO THE FCA AND THEY GOT ME IN CONTACT WITH DEALERSHIPS WHO DID NOT HAVE THE PARTS READILY AVAILABLE AND COULD NOT GIVE ME AN ETA. I INSISTED THAT I HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND I DID NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE DRIVING AROUND A VEHICLE THAT COULD AT ANY TIME CAUSE A CRASH BECAUSE OF A DEFECTED PART. I WAS TOLD IT WAS A ONE IN A MILLION CHANCE THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN, WHICH OBVIOUSLY IS NOT THE CASE IF A RECALL WAS ISSUED.

Problems with the Brakes

If nothing else were to fail, owners still need to keep an eye on their brakes. It’s another system that continues to receive overwhelming complaints.

Just read this one review from an NHTSA user. “After a few months of use, the brake rotors had deep scoring and were replaced by the dealer. At less than a year, the brake rotors and pads scored again and now the vehicle pulls to one side when the brakes are applied hard.”

This is one time the company decided to remain quiet. If they had communication about the braking problems, it wasn’t made public. This brings us back to how the Renegade was able to win any awards at all. The only thing we figure is the judges received a “special” version of the SUV that wasn’t built like the others. Clearly, they didn’t experience failing engines, defective fuel systems and faulty electronics like the majority of users do. Or, they did and felt it was still better than most modern vehicles – we just can’t tell.

Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2017 Jeep Renegade Brake Problems

I WAS HEARING A NOISE WHEN I BRAKE SO I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE FRONT BRAKES LOOKED AT. I WAS TOLD THAT THE FRONT ROTORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I WAS SHOCKED BECAUSE THE CAR IS 11 MONTHS OLD WITH 19,152 MILES THERE IS NO WAY THAT I SHOULD NEED TO HAVE MY ROTORS AND BRAKES REPLACED. I RESEARCHED AND FOUND THAT THIS MODEL IS KNOWN TO HAVE BRAKE PAD ISSUES WHICH CAUSES THE ROTORS TO HAVE GROOVES. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE THAT I SHOULD HAVE TO REPLACE BRAKES THIS SOON.

AFTER A FEW MONTHS OF USE THE BRAKE ROTORS HAD DEEP SCORING AND WERE REPLACED BY THE DEALER. AT LESS THAN A YEAR THE BRAKE ROTORS AND PADS SCORN AGAIN AND NOW THE VEHICLE PULLS TO ONE SIDE WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED HARD.
