They’re legit. According to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Sunrise Credit Services, Inc. is a legitimate collection agency founded and incorporated in 1975. The BBB established Sunrise’s profile in 2000. Sunrise is listed under collection agencies, business processing optimization, and general business services. Buzzfile estimates Sunrise’s annual revenue at $34.5 million.
According to its website, Sunrise offers “customized programs for managing all of your receivables needs and collections as an extension of your own operations or on a standalone basis.” Since its founding in 1975, Sunrise has grown to become one of the largest Accounts Receivable Management (ARM) companies in the United States. Sunrise employs over 500 people at its 40,000 square-foot headquarters facility.
Sunrise Credit Services provides third-party collection services for retailers, banks, and other credit grantors nationwide. SCS is also one of a family of three companies. NetTel USA, Inc., provides Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) services such as call center services and extended business office outsourcing for a variety of industries. Sunrise Capital Management, Inc., is a debt buyer that allows lenders from all industries to generate operating capital by selling off delinquent debt.
Sunrise employees are trained at the Sunrise Family of Companies University (SFCU), which is an internal, proprietary “training program modeled after a university curriculum by collection professionals with over 35 years of industry experience.” After 175 hours of coursework, “collection professionals are awarded a Certified Degree from SFCU.” However, Sunrise’s website does not contain any references or links to external consumer resources or state or federal laws such as the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act (FDCPA).

Absolutely. You can sue a debt collector. Here is a Sample Complaint:
For the most part, the details of consumer complaints against Sunrise Credit Services on the BBB website are unavailable. However, the CFPB website provides narratives of the consumer complaints it receives. In June 2017, the CFPB reports that a complainant indicated SCS began contacting him about a delinquent debt. The complainant indicated to Sunrise that the bill had been disputed with the New York State Attorney General and CFPB. The complainant indicated a Sunrise representative responded by stating “it was not their problem and to pay up.” The complainant indicated SCS continued to call several times a day despite a cease and desist request, and that calls had been increasingly aggressive and threatening, bordering on harassment. Also in June 2017, a complainant indicated Sunrise representatives had been “calling repeatedly from different phone numbers within minutes of each other.” Representatives called throughout the day asking for verification of personal information. The complainant indicated to Sunrise representatives when his pay day occurred, when he would be submitting payment, and requested that calls cease and desist until then, but the calls continued. The complainant also alleged that Sunrise representatives refused to send written correspondence. In May 2017, a complainant indicated Sunrise representatives had been “calling my home for a month a dozen times a day.” The complainant indicated that he had informed Sunrise that it was not his debt. Sunrise said his name and number would be removed from the calling list, but he soon began receiving calls again. Also in May 2017, a complainant indicated that Sunrise representatives had “been calling at least 4 times a day.” The complainant “asked them repeatedly to stop calling…at work,” but the calls persisted because Sunrise representatives complained that the consumer didn’t answer the phone after work. In all these cases, the CFPB has indicated that the “[c]ompany has responded to the consumer and the CFPB and chooses not to provide a public response.”
Federal laws protect you. The Fair Debt Collections Practices Act (FDCPA) regulates the behavior of collection agencies by prohibiting actions such as the use of abusive or threatening language; harassment; or the use of false or misleading information to collect a debt. The FCRA regulates how collection agencies and creditors report delinquent debts to credit reporting agencies. Additional consumer protection laws include the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and the Consumer Financial Protection Act (CFPA).
